The metal fabrication division has manufactured the first operational
TimeBall in the UK since 1913. It was installed in October on top of the
clock tower at Prestons of
Bolton to replace the original which was removed
for structural reasons in the 1990’s.
The TimeBall is spun aluminium with gold leaf and a circumference of 2.36m.
It rises at 12:55 and drops at 13:00 hrs in conjunction with the Greenwich
TimeBall. The structure which supports the TimeBall is manufactured out
of stainless steel rods 63mm in diameter and 4.3m in length. The timekeeping
element of the TimeBall was supplied by Gillett and Johnston, clockmakers
of Croydon and installation was undertaken by Peter Dooley Design Ltd with
assistance from Bailey International Steeplejacks.
